2009 RICHARD S. HODES HONOR LECTURE AWARD PROGRAM
Each year the Southeast Compact Commission solicits nominations for the Richard S. Hodes, M.D. Honor Lecture Award.  The award is presented to an individual, company, or organization that contributed in a significant way to improving the technology, policy, or practices of low-level radioactive waste management in the United States.

The Selection Committee (Commissioners Wheary, Shults, and Burks) reviewed the three nominations submitted and selected Susan Jablonski to be recognized as the 2009 Richard S. Hodes, M.D. Honor Lecture Award recipient at the Waste Management Symposium in March 2009 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Ms. Jablonski is currently the Director of the Radioactive Materials Division at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).  She manages Texas’ regulatory programs for the disposal of commercial radioactive material, source material (uranium) recovery, and commercial radioactive waste storage and processing.  In this capacity, she is responsible for the licensing review of the first new radioactive commercial waste disposal facility in nearly two decades.

Ms. Jablonski is being recognized for her innovative approach to regulation of radioactive waste disposal in Texas, as well as for her efforts in educating and inspiring science teachers and students at the high school and university levels.

Nominations for the 2010 Hodes Honor Lecture Award are now being accepted.  Details are on the Commission website at www.secompact.org or you may contact Ted Buckner at 919/821-0500 or tedb@secompact.org.

COMMISSION ADOPTS POLICY STATEMENTS
AND STRATEGIC PLAN
At its Annual Meeting on June 27, 2008, the Commission adopted three key documents. The Policy Statement Regarding Radiation Control in the United States is a new document. In this document the Commission recommends that the United States Congress promulgate legislation establishing a national policy in regard to ionizing radiation, including the management of radioactive waste.

The Policy Statement on the Management of Low-Level Radioactive Waste is a revised version of a document adopted in 2005.  It states the views of the Commission with regard to future options for waste disposal in the Southeast Compact region.

The Strategic Plan for Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management was revised from an earlier document.  This document guides the work of the Commission and its staff throughout the year.  For more information, contact Linda Walters at 919/821-0500 or lwalters@secompact.org

DIRECTORY OF BROKERS AND PROCESSORS
